Being a writer isn’t easy. It’s even less easy when you commit to writing for children, who can be perhaps your toughest audience. Where adults have learned social convention and know how to approach subjects tactfully, kids haven’t. They know what they want and if you aren’t offering it, they won’t care what you do.
That’s why knowing how to write children’s books is crucial before stumbling into the unknown territory. Children’s books firstly have to be engaging. The story has to have the perfect blend of simplicity and story. The story needs to be easy to follow but have enough detail that the child wants to know what’s going to happen. This is much harder than it sounds and can prove the breaking point for many writers.
Kid’s books must also have believable characters. Yes, they might be a fuzzy pink rabbit but if they have a human name and display human characteristics, then a child will likely believe in them. Kids also relate to characters who are like them, so it’s a good idea to base your story around young characters if you can. You’ll probably want to drop in one older character to act as an anchor for the story, but no more than this.
You’ll have to think about situations the child can relate too also. So for example, a story about a person breaking up from their other half and drowning their sorrows in a bottle of Merlot isn’t going to work. However, a story about a child that has had a fight with their friend and therefore chooses to eat lots of ice-cream (with sprinkles) could work well!
Lastly, you want to base the story on a moral that won’t ever date. Kids love to hear their favourite stories over and over again, night after night. This is because the basis doesn’t change – like slow and steady wins the race, or good often triumphs over evil. Longevity is key in kid’s books – just look at the Hungry Caterpillar or the Winnie the Pooh series.
